A resident at an alcohol dependency who savagely attacked a female patient as she slept was jailed for sixteen months.
Harish Gokar, 55, muffled Elizabeth Kelly’s screams before dragging her from her bed and stamping on her
neck and chest until she blacked out in agony.
But because Gokar has spent over eight months in custody since the incident, he will be freed immediately.
Gokar told police after the incident: ‘She annoyed me.
‘
Prosecutor Mr Nicholas Jones, told the court that Gokar had said to police: ‘ She annoyed him.
The 42 year-old woman, who weighs just six stone, had gone to bed believing she had locked the two doors that led into her bedroom at the centre in Burleigh Road, Kentish Town.
But she awoke to find Gokar standing by her bed.
Although she passed out during the attack she regained consciousness to see him leaving the room.
She immediately called for help, and needed treatment for facial injuries and bruising following the incident last February.
Interviewed by police Gokar said that he had kicked her in the neck.
He later added: ‘I am sorry for what I have done.
‘
An Old Bailey court heard that Gokar, a Gujarati who speaks little English, has a history of assaults against women dating back to 1969.
Goker had been warned at a previous hearing that he faced a prison sentence.
‘You entered her bedroom without invitation and you ended up by assaulting her and kicking and stamping on her causing her injuries which have been seen in photographs,’ said Judge Roberts QC at a previous hearing.
But today sentencing Goker to sixteen months imprisonment the Judge told him : ‘You have a bad record of offences of this kind.
You must make sure that this is the last time you appear in court.
‘If you come before this court again you are likely to receive a serious sentence.
‘
Gokar, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty at an earlier occasion to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
