A spray painter killed a black man in a racist attack then boasted: ‘I’ve done a nigger,’ a court heard.
James Green, 26, punched unemployed Derek Shaw outside a chicken shop in Redhill, Surrey, the Old Bailey heard.
Mr Shaw, 21, hit his head as he fell to the ground and died after suffering massive swelling to the brain.
The incident happened after Mr Shaw and his friends went to the British Embassy Rock bar in Redhill after a night drinking in Croydon on Friday 25 October last year.
Mr Shaw had rowed with another man who was later ejected.
The ejected man continued the argument outside the club and Green witnessed the row, jurors were told.
The exchange appeared to end amicably and Mr Shaw then went to the Favourite Chicken restaurant nearby.
‘Mr Green suddenly lurched at him, punched him in the face,’ Mr Connolly said.
‘There was at least one punch.
Some witnesses describe more.
That punch caused Derek Shaw to fall to the ground.
‘He hit the ground and that blow to his head as he hit the ground was what caused the severe injury, which caused the massive swelling to his brain and sadly it was from that he died.
‘
Green made a number of racist comments at the time of the assault, Mr Connolly said.
‘He was calling him a ‘nigger’, saying ‘White’s white,’ he told jurors.
‘There are a number of witnesses who describe him as saying ‘I have done a nigger,’ he added.
The court heard that Green was also prancing around Shaw as though fired up for a fight.
‘Certainly from many accounts he was looking for a fight,’ the prosecutor said.
‘He was enjoying it and making that plain from his behaviour afterwards,’ Connolly said.
After the attack, a number of people rushed to help Shaw, who was placed in the recovery position.
But the 21-year-old died on October 31 last year, the court heard.
When interviewed by police, Green admitted he had been drinking that evening but said he was not drunk.
He denied that he had been looking for a fight or that he had made racist comments.
Green told police he had acted in self-defence when Shaw approached him and tried to bite his nose.
‘He says he hit out only in self-defence.
He denied that he made any racist comments,’ said Connolly.
But Mr Connolly insisted Green was driven by hatred.
‘It seems to have been a motivation in his mind.
It seems that there was some element of that in the background,’ the barrister added.
Green, of Horley Lane, Redhill, Surrey, denies a charge of manslaughter on 31 October last year.
The trial continues.
