A vicious brute who gave a teenage girl a severe beating
before subjecting her to a foul sex attack laughed as he was led
off to begin a six-year jail sentence today (thurs).

Michael Dyer, 25, had subjected his victim to the ‘ultimate
humiliation’ during a night long ordeal of violence at his mothers
home in Croydon.

Judge John Rogers told Dyer, of St James Road, Croydon: ‘What
you were bent upon on that particular opportunity was to deliberately
humiliate that young girl.

‘Part of the process of that humiliation was the infliction
of a severe beating which culminated at the end in a deliberate and
forceful act (of buggery) totally contrary to her wishes which was
meant by you to create the ultimate humiliation of her as a woman.

‘
Dyer rained blows on the girl with a plank of wood before
sexually assaulting her in an attempt to force her to become a
prostitute.

After a Newton hearing to establish whether the girl had
consented to the sex act the judge said that he could not accept
Dyer’s claims that she had agreed to it.

Referring to Dyer giving evidence on the disputed issue the
judge commented: ‘On three occasions the defendant found the matter
funny.

‘I came to the conclusion he was laughing because he was
lying.

‘
Earlier when cross-examined Dyer had smiled when prosecutor
Mr Sam Katkhuda said: ‘You beat her so she will do exactly what you
will say.

to put her on the streets to earn money.

‘Your intention was to humiliate her, beat her sexually
so you could put her on the street as a prostitute.

‘
Dyer had gone to babysit at his mothers house in Bates
Crescent, Waddon, with the girl, who was previously known to him.

During the evening he took her to his old bedroom, where
her ordeal began.

She had wanted to run away but knew he had locked
all the doors in the house.

The following day he took her to his flat, where she managed
to call the police while he was having a bath.

Police raced to the address and arrested him.

His 17-year-old
victim had 13 bruises and a cut on her head which required stitches.

Dyer was sentenced to six years for the serious sexual assault
and 30 months for assault, to run concurrently.

He had admitted committing the unnatural act, an offence in
law, but claimed it was with consent.

That was rejected by the
judge following the Newton hearing.

He also admitted assaulting the girl at his mother’s home.

The judge had earlier ordered a jury to find Dyer not guilty
of raping the girl, which he denied, because her evidence was not
sufficient to convict him.

He had denied a second charge of assault which the victim
had alleged took place after they had left his mother’s house.

That
charge was allowed to lie on the file.

The court heard Dyer has a string of previous convictions
beginning in 1985.

The offences included attacking his sister with
a plank of wood, hitting a pub customer with a billiard cue and
assaulting a man with an iron pipe.
