A woman motorist today (FRI) told how she saw the silver flash of a knife as road rage killer Kenneth Noye scuffled with Stephen Cameron.
Amanda Whelan said she heard Stephen’s ‘hysterical’ fiancee Danielle Cable begging other drivers for help as the pair traded blows.
And she said that, just as she was about to intervene, she watched Noye stride to his Land Rover Discovery and roar off.
Lecturer Ms Whelan told an Old Bailey jury that she was on the A20 nearing the M25 interchange in Swanley, Kent, when one of her children spotted Noye, 52, and 21-year-old Stephen fighting at the roadside.
Ms Whelan, who was a passenger in her partner’s VW Golf, said: ‘First of all I heard a woman screaming hysterically, and she was running about at the side of the road and screaming ”Get him off, help, help”.
‘There was a younger man in front of a van who was fighting with an older man.
The young man had his back to the red van.
‘At that point I decided to get out of the car and go and intervene in the fight.
So I opened the passenger door and started to get out.
‘However, at that point the older man broke away.
He strode – he didn’t run.
He walked briskly towards his Land Rover Discovery, got in, and accelerated away.
‘
Prosecutor Julian Bevan, QC, then asked Ms Whelan to describe the fight in more detail.
She told the court: ‘They were trading punches, and the younger man was kicking at the older man.
The older man was punching, and they were making contact with each other’s bodies.
‘I saw a silver flash, but I assumed it was a watch-band.
I think it was in the right hand.
‘The young man was fighting as well – he was larger than the older man and he was kicking at him.
I think he was also sort of trying to push him and punch him away.
‘
Ms Whelan added that Danielle, then 17, was desperately trying to stop the fight and get other motorists to help.
At one point, the teenager even tried to pull her fiancee away, it was claimed.
Ms Whelan said: ‘The woman was actually getting hold of the younger man’s arm or jacket and she seemed to be trying to break the fight.
‘She was absolutely hysterical and jumping around and leaping about in the road, screaming ”Help, help, get him off”.
‘
Earlier, Stephen’s dad Kenneth told the court that his son was in a ‘happy’ mood on the morning of his death.
Mr Cameron, who lives near Swanley, said the lad had done kickboxing for a time, but added: ‘Stephen went to the gym to do weight training – that’s all.
‘
Mr Cameron confirmed that he remember Stephen getting into a fight with a neighbour at a party to celebrate his engagement to Danielle.
The jury has heard how electrician Stephen died within 40 minutes of being stabbed in incident on May 19, 1996.
A knife was plunged through his heart and liver in the scuffle.
Noye admits stabbing the youngster, but claims he was acting in self-defence.
He fled the country the day after the incident, and was arrested in Spain more than two years later.
Noye, of Uplands Way, Sevenoaks, Kent, denies murder.
The trial continues.
