Accused cop claims woman was angered when he rolled over and went to sleep
A Met Police officer accused of assaulting a woman while she slept claims she was annoyed because he rolled over to doze off after they had sex without saying anything.
PC Rupert Edwards, 30, is accused of raping two women in the space of eleven days.
He met the first woman at the Slug and Lettuce in Richmond, southwest London, on August 25 last year, Inner London Crown Court heard.
It is alleged that he had consensual sex with the first woman but then raped her after she told him: ‘I can’t any more, I’m raw.’
He met the second woman at the Ship Pub in Wandsworth on 4 September last year, and went with her to McDonalds afterwards, it is said.
She woke to find Edwards having sex with her despite her saying she did not want intercourse without condoms, it is claimed.
Edwards gave evidence in court today (fri) wearing a dark blue suit with a light blue tie.
He told the court ‘I always wanted to join the police, to do that as a career,’ and joined up in February 2014.
Edwards said he had had three long-term relationships, but had shorter term relationships and one night stands in between.
He said that he does not usually bring up the subject of contraception with sexual partners, but usually leaves it to them.
‘I don’t commonly speak about contraception with any sexual partner. I leave it to the other person to bring it up,’ he explained.
But he insisted that if someone did not want to have sex without contraception they would either use it or not have sex.
He was asked about the first time he met the first woman that he allegedly raped.
‘How were the two of you getting on’, asked Ailsa Williamson, defending.
‘Really well. We were really friendly and flirty,’ he said.
They then went back to her address, and had consensual sex.
However, the woman claims that Edwards then raped her after she said ‘I can’t go again. I’m raw.’
‘Had she ever said anything at any point about being raw, or sore, or anything along those lines?’ his barrister asked.
‘No she did not,’ the officer said. ‘She never said that, never.’
He was asked if it was possible that she had said it, but he did not hear.
‘No, it was silent. It was early, there was no music. She just didn’t say that,’ he told the court.
Edwards claims that the first woman had ‘liked’ him on the networking app ‘Tinder’ , but that after he checked the app after his arrest, the like had gone.
‘Unfortunately it wasn’t there any more. ‘I could not provide that ‘like’, it had gone.’
He was then asked about the alleged attack on the second woman.
Edwards said that when he first met her at the pub ‘she came over to me, and we started dancing and chatting.’
They then went back to her address.
He told the court that once they were there they enjoyed consensual sex acts.
The second woman claims that he raped her while she was asleep, but Edwards insists that she was awake and that it was consensual.
He was asked if it was possible that she was asleep.
‘No, she was moving. I didn’t believe she was asleep at any time – no.’
He said he then tried to go to sleep, but the woman asked him to leave.
‘Her tone was a little bit annoyed. I felt a little bit awkward,’ said Edwards.
He said he thought she might have sounded annoyed because he had ‘turned over’ to go to sleep after they had sex without saying anything.’
‘I just felt a bit awkward. To turn over and not say anything is probably a bit rude.’
He said he thanked her for letting him stay.
The woman later sent him a text saying ‘Thank you so much for destroying my faith in the criminal justice system.’
He claims he did not read this text prior to his arrest that day.
Edwards, of Ashtead, Surrey, denies two counts of rape.
