Earlier Anyetei told the committee that in his current financial situation he could only afford to stop work for two weeks.

‘I don’t think I could afford to survive after two weeks.

Anyetei was found guilty of failing to provide information to the General Dental Council whether he had indemnity cover – a form of insurance – in
case anything went wrong.

Anyetei said he thought he had indemnity cover – but now he realises that
when his bank accounts were frozen following bankruptcy proceedings in
August 2000, his cover also ceased.

‘At that time I didn’t really know what was happening,’ he told the panel.

Anyetei even told a hearing in October this year he thought his cover was in
place – but later found out an attempt to pay back missed payments had been
rejected.

He is currently awaiting to hear whether another medical defence
organisation will accept his application.

‘I am prepared to stop seeing patients until I obtain the cover,’ he said.

Anyetei sobbed when he spoke of the lessons he had learnt.

‘I never hoped
for it to come to this,’ he said, dabbing at his eyes with a handkerchief.

He said his number of patients was much reduced because of ‘adverse
publicity’.

He never meant any disrespect by not replying to GDC
correspondence.

‘I always intended to reply.

I wasn’t always sure how to approach the
matter.

I know I needed someone to help but I wasn’t sure which way to go.
