‘Bedroom boffin’ jailed for blowing himself up

An obsessed amateur chemist who blew himself up with the explosives he made in his bedroom laboratory has been jailed for four years and six months. Matthew Haydon, 48, who lived with his elderly mother, was fascinated by chemical reactions and would spend hours watching them on YouTube. When social services took his daughter away he converted her bedroom in Loring Road, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire into a laboratory, much to his mother’s displeasure.
