‘Eggheads’ star wanted for murder
Former Eggheads star CJ de Mooi could be extradited to the Netherlands after claiming in his autobiography he killed a homeless thief in Amsterdam almost 30 years ago.
The 46-year-old quiz expert said he punched a knife-wielding mugger and threw his body into a canal while he was sleeping rough in the Dutch capital in 1988.
Last year he confessed ‘I fully suspect I killed him’ as he remembered the incident in his controversial autobiography.
Dutch police began to investigate the alleged crime after seeing reports of de Mooi’s book launch in September 2015.
The daytime TV star revealed he had slept rough for three years around Europe and was forced into prostitution after a troubled upbringing in Rotherham, south Yorkshire.
Yesterday police arrested him at Heathrow Airport on a European arrest warrant under his real name Joseph Connagh.
De Mooi, originally from Rotherham, is due to face Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today (thurs).
The warrant issued in Holland states that he is wanted in relation to ‘an allegation of manslaughter’.
De Mooi, of Manor Farm, St. Brides Netherwent, Caldicot, Monmouthshire, will tell the court if he consents to extradition at his hearing later today (thurs).
