Later Richard Shillibeer said outside the court: ‘I am pleased about the guilty verdicts and I feel a sense of relief for Grahame’s family.

‘Since the attack I haven’t recovered mentally knowing that this sort of attack can happen to anybody.

‘Grahame was a nice, genuine guy who didn’t deserve what happened – this is going to be a black spot in the lives of everyone who knew him.

The officer leading the inquiry, Det Insp Martin James, said afterwards: ‘One of the main reasons why convictions were achieved is that members of the community were prepared to come forward and give evidence against those responsible.

‘The police and family would like to thank them for discharging their public duty so readily.

‘I hope this sends a clear message to those involved in violent behaviour that the Metropolitan Police in conjunction with the community will work together to bring those responsible to justice.

‘It has always been the prosecution case that these three individuals were not the only ones involved in Grahame Thomas’s death.

‘I would ask that any member of the public who has information as to the identity of other persons involved to come forward.
