New hearing for EDL leader

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson will face a new contempt of court hearing at the Old Bailey next week.

The former leader of the English Defence League, 35, is said to have committed contempt by filming people on trial at Leeds Crown Court and broadcasting footage on social media.

The Recorder of London, Nicholas Hilliard, QC, confirmed today Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, will face a full hearing on October 23.

Robinson was jailed for 10 months in May but he appealed and was released on HMP Onley in Rugby on August 1.

When he appeared in court last month the activist was cheered by a large group of supporters waving flags and banners.

But Robinson did not attend today’s brief hearing when Judge Hilliard confirmed the case would remain at the Old Bailey.

‘This is just to say that I am not referring the matter of possible contempt of court by Mr Stephen Yaxley-Lennon to the Attorney General for him to consider whether or not to instigate proceedings,’ the judge said.

‘I shall hear the matter myself on October 23 as ordered by the Court of Appeal.’

Robinson denies contempt and could face jail if he is convicted.
