TALIANA: PAIR IN COURT OVER MURDER OF WAITER
Two teenagers charged with knifing a silver service waiter to death were remanded in custody by an Old Bailey judge today (Tues).
Vitalijs Janovics staggered to Bermondsey underground station moments after he was stabbed through the heart at around 1.05am on July 22.
The 38-year-old, whose girlfriend and three-year-old son are now in his native Latvia, was rushed to King’s College Hospital but pronounced dead an hour later.
A post-mortem determined the cause of death to be a single stab wound to the heart, the court heard.
Khaled Ait-Said and Kai Taliana, both 18, today (Tues) appeared in the Old Bailey via video-link from prison after being arrested on July 26.
Judge Peter Thornton QC rejected an application by both to be released on bail pending their trial.
Mr Janovics had earlier finished his shift at the St Martin in the Fields church cafe, Trafalgar Square, at around 8pm.
He withdrew £100 in cash prior the attack from an ATM outside the tube station.
Taliana, of Vauban Estate, Bermondsey; and Ait-Said, of Guinness Court, Mansell Street, Whitechapel, east London; were remanded in custody until November 4 for a plea and case management hearing.
