Two brothers beat and kicked another man unconscio

Two brothers beat and kicked another man unconscious
after mistakenly blaming him for ‘grassing’ one of them
up for a car smash, the Old Bailey heard today Tuesday.

David Unwin, 28, jumped to the wrong conclusion after he saw
Darren Bliss, also 28, in the police station when he was brought
in for questioning, it was alleged.

Unwin and his brother Andrew, 24, and two other men ambushed
Mr Bliss after forcing their way into his girlfriend’s home and
holding her hostage until he returned, the jury was told.

Mr Bliss was beaten and kicked senseless before being robbed
of his money and his car, said Mr Mark Gadsden, prosecuting.

David and Andrew Unwin, both of The Schoolhouse, Church
Lane, East Finchley, deny false imprisonment, robbery, assault
and taking Mr Bliss’s Jaguar on June 20 this year.

The jury was told the spark for the savage attack was a car
smash in Nightingale Road, Lower Edmonton, two days before.

David Unwin and Mr Bliss both fled from the scene after the
car Unwin was driving was in a head-on collision with another
car, counsel said.

‘The accident was serious and the injuries to the other
person were serious.

‘Mr Bliss went to the police station in the early hours of
the morning to give his statement.

‘Unwin had been identified as the driver and at 4am had been
arrested and taken to the same police station.

‘They saw each other.

That might provide the motive for what
happened in the early hours of the following morning.

David
Unwin made the allegation that Mr Bliss had grassed him up.

‘
Unwin was questioned and released.

Mr Bliss went out the next night, counsel said.

‘Before he returned to the home of Diane Holman, Mr Bliss’s
girlfriend, in Pickwick Mews, North Edmonton, the Unwin brothers
and two other men burst in.

‘They pushed their way into the flat and said they were
waiting for her boyfriend.

He said he had grassed him up and
they were going to give him a beating.

‘She was kept prisoner until her boyfriend arrived.

‘
Mr Bliss walked in the door expecting to be greeted by his
girlfriend but instead was greeted by the Unwins and the other
two men, the court heard.

‘They began punching him, beating him and kicking him on the
floor and whipping him with car aerials.

‘In the final stages, Andrew Unwin went through Mr Bliss’s
pockets and took pnds stlng 50 cash and the keys to his Jaguar.

‘Mr Bliss was badly beaten up and was unconscious.

He was
taken to hospital.

‘
The four men left in their victim’s Jaguar, the jury heard.

The car was found the next day.

The driver said the Unwins
had sold it to them.

The defendants told police they were elsewhere at the time of
the robbery and will be calling alibi witnesses.

The trial continues.
