An alleged killer told a jury today (Thurs) he had steamy sex with a young barmaid on the night she was throttled to death in her own flat.
Anthony Ruark, 41, nicknamed ‘Pokey’, said he took Jacqueline Poole, 25, from behind against her sofa while partially clothed.
He was charged with her murder back in February 1983 but was released through lack of evidence.
Ruark is now standing trial at the Old Bailey following his re-arrest after forensic experts analysed samples taken from the murder scene 18 years ago.
Plasterer Ruark said he started having sex with Mrs Poole while her fiancee was in prison and behind his own girlfriend’s back.
‘After he was put away I would visit her maybe once a week,’ he told the jury.
‘My sexual relationship with my partner was non-existent.
I wasn’t an experienced lover at all but Jacqueline played a leading role and helped me.
‘She just generally loved sex.
She used to give me oral sex and masturbate me to give me an erection.
‘She asked me to tie her up once but I didn’t want to do it.
‘I had never had sex with anyone else before but had sex with Jacqueline about six or seven times.
‘It was always in the living room, never in her bedroom – she didn’t want to do it in there because of her fiancee.
‘She used to like me to take her from behind against her sofa.
Most of the time we took all our clothes off, but sometimes she would keep her knickers on.
‘
Ruark told how he visited Mrs Poole at her flat in Ruislip, west London on the night she was killed – February 11, 1983.
He told jurors how he had sex with her against the sofa while they were both half naked.
Her body was found two days later leaning against her sofa with her bum exposed, the court has heard.
She had been strangled with a ligature.
Forensic experts discovered fluids on her backside which matched Ruark’s DNA.
They also found his DNA under her fingernails where, the Crown claim, she scratched her attacker’s hands as he tried to throttle her.
But Ruark maintains she was fine when he left her that night.
Ruark, of Hanstone Close, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, denies murder.
The trial continues.
