Giving evidence Dr Galea told the GMC how he joked about the size of a nurse’s breasts.

‘One time she said she fell flat on her face.

I said, that’s physically impossible.

‘If you did fall flat on your face you’d bounce right back.

‘

Asked by his counsel Christina Lambert if she thought that was funny, he replied:

‘Yes, she laughed.

‘

Quizzed about another incident when Galea was accused of slapping a nurse’s backside, Galea said ‘that was a sleight of hand’.

He explained: ‘I purposely hit the mattress with a big loud bang.

‘I’m sure it looked like a spanking, when she reacted adversely I just wound her up.

‘

Explaining how he achieved the ‘parlour trick’ Galea said:

‘I know I’m good at doing this.

‘

He demonstrated how he would slap his own hand
pretending it was a part of someone else’s body.

‘When I lived in a small community, everyone knew me as a wife beater.

‘

He said that at dinner parties, he would pretend to slap his wife – but slap his own hand out of sight.

‘All her guests would burst into tears, while my guests burst into laughter.

‘
