VAN DER RIET: CRYSTAL METH KILLER JAILED FOR SIX YEARS

A crystal meth dealer has been jailed for six years for killing a ‘runner’ over a £1,500 debt.

David Van Der Riet, 34, dumped critically injured Jaypee Maderazo on the side of the road after knocking him unconscious with a single blow.

Mr Maderazo, 29, had suffered massive brain injuries after striking his head on the ground after being punched during a heated row with Van Der Riet.

The victim, a Filipino drug addict, was not identified until after he died four days later in hospital on August 17 last year.

Van Der Riet, a South African also known as ‘George’, admitted the manslaughter of Mr Maderazo and two counts of dealing crystal meth.

He was jailed for a total of six years and is likely to face deportation at the end of his sentence, after the Old Bailey heard his visa had run out.

‘The circumstances of the offence have a nasty background of drug supply,’ said Judge Stephen Kramer QC.

‘You struck him forcefully to the head, he fell to the ground and he sustained a large blood clot immediately below the skull.

‘He subsequently died as a result of your unlawful act. You took him in your boot and you deposited him fatally injured in a street in Harlesden – a heartless act.’

The Old Bailey heard Van Der Riet preyed on a small community of Filipino drug addicts by selling them crystal meth – otherwise known as ‘poor man’s cocaine.’

Mr Maderazo, who had a wife and two children who live abroad, sold the highly addictive drug for Van Der Riet but by August 2010 owed him around £1,500.

Van Der Riet charged £50 per 0.25g of the drug. After his arrest over the death of Mr Maderazo police found a stash of 29g of the drug, with a street value of £6,800.

It is unclear whether Mr Maderazo had been smoking the drugs he should have been selling on or gambled away the proceeds.

He was lured to a house in northwest London on the night of August 12 and Van Der Riet approached him outside.

During a heated row Van Der Riet felled the victim with a single blow.

He then put him in the boot of his car and drove him to Cecil Road in Harlesden, where he dumped him in the street and drove off.

Mr Maderazo was found lying injured by a member of the public in the early hours of the following day.

He was taken to the Royal Free Hospital where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain, but he never regained consciousness and died four days later.

Van Der Riet was arrested on August 28 at a bedsit in Kensal Road, Kensal Town, northwest London.

During a search he was also found to have more than £2,000 on him, along with the drugs.

Van Der Riet was originally charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the first day of his trial.

His friend Victor Wilkens, 27, was jailed for 12 months for assaulting another of Van Der Riet’s customers on August 18 last year.

He attacked Filipino Jerwen Dalonos (CORR) on the stairwell of a flat in Kensal Town on the orders of the dealer.

Mr Dalonos was punched in the head several times, but escaped with cut lips and a bruised face.

Wilkens, who is also a crystal meth addict, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

‘The offence was a pre-meditated one and also had a background of drug dealing. You had been taking drugs and went with your co-defendant to the address because he had a problem with the man who lived there,’ said the judge.

Van Der Riet, of (20) Garrett House, Windmill Road, Brentford, west London, was jailed for three years for manslaughter and a further three years for possession of drugs with intent to supply.

The sentences will run consecutively to each other.

Wilkens, of Mortimer House, Queensdale Crescent, Notting Hill, west London, admitted ABH.
