PATEL:MAGISTRATES’ COURT CLERK REMANDED IN CUSTODY OVER BRIBE CLAIMS

A clerk at a magistrates’ court was remanded in custody today (Thurs) over claims he took bribes to make speeding tickets ‘go away.’

Munir Patel, 21, was filmed in a newspaper investigation apparently agreeing to take £500 in return for clearing a motorist.

It is said that he took the cash at Redbridge Magistrates’ Court, east London, to avoid putting details of a traffic summons onto a database.

Patel allegedly told the driver he could expect three points and a fine or pay £500 to make it ‘go away’.

He also boasted that he took bribes ‘all day long’ in his job as an administrative clerk, it is claimed.

Patel, of Green Lane, Dagenham, east London, is charged with misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice. Police have also arrested a 30-year-old man.

Patel did not enter a plea when he appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court this morning.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Southwark Crown Court on October 14.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman confirmed that two members of staff from Redbridge Magistrates’ Court in Essex have been suspended.
