Tel gets £50k bill

Former gangster Terry Adams is facing a demand for £50,000 in prosecution costs – more than a decade after he was jailed for money laundering.

The 63-year-old former head of the notorious Adams family was jailed for seven years in 2007 after a £10m police surveillance operation.

Adams finally paid back more than £720,000 of his criminal earnings last year to avoid being sent back to jail.

But the Crown now wants £46,258 in costs from his original trial at the Old Bailey.

Adams was excused from the hearing today (weds) his lawyer Stephen Gilchrist told Westminster Magistrates’ Court ‘enough is enough.’

‘He has been subject to criminal proceedings for 20 years now.

‘I will ask the court to set a date to stay proceedings.’

The hearing was adjourned until 21 November.

Adams – who was once charged with handling the stolen Brink’s Mat gold – helped run the ‘Clerkenwell Crime Syndicate’ with brothers Patsy and Tommy.

Patsy Adams was jailed for nine years in 2016 for attacking Paul Tiernan, whom he had accused of being a ‘grass’.

Tommy Adams was jailed for seven years in 2017 for money laundering.

The organisation, known as the Adams Family or A-team, became one of the most powerful crime gangs in London.

Terry Adams was described at his trial in 2007 ‘as one of the country’s most feared and revered organised criminals’.
