A depressed Romeo wrote his suicide note on a Vale

A depressed Romeo wrote his suicide note on a Valentine’s
card to his lover, an inquest heard today (Wed).

He then hanged himself from his balcony for all the world
to see, Southwark Coroners Court was told.

Unemployed arcade manager, 45-year-old Angus Cairns of
Bermondsey, se London was found hanging from the balcony of his
first floor docklands apartment by a teenager on February 16.

The startled 17-year-old, Gem (corr) Cleary, was opening up
Roxley’s Key Cutters on Tower Bridge Road when he spotted the dead
man hanging.

He told the inquest: ‘I was just storing the shop shutters
in the courtyard off the main road when I saw him.

‘I realised what had happened immediately and ran back into
the shop to call the police.

‘
Mr Cairns’ girlfriend of two years Karita Morton, of Poplar,
e.

London wept as she told the court she had seen him the night
before the tragedy and that there had been a tiff over Valentine’s
presents.

She told coroner Sir Montague Levine: ‘I showed him a
necklace that my father had given me for Valentine’s.

‘He got very annoyed because he could not afford to
give me a present.

Police found a suicide note in the dead man’s Tower Bridge
Road flat, written inside a crimson Valentine card.

Saving the family and girlfriend of the deceased any
further distress Sir Montague simply commented: ‘It’s a nice
note, a loving note – a protestation of love.

‘
Miss Morton explained that she had telephoned him on
the morning of February 16, unaware of his death, in the hope
of calming the waters after their tiff.

‘We did not often argue but when we did it was normally
straightened out the next day,’ she said.

The phone was answered by nephew of the deceased Jason
Cairns, who lived with his uncle.

He told the inquest: ‘The police had told me not to tell
anyone of my uncle’s death over the phone so I said to Karita
that he would phone back.

‘
Police contacted Miss Morton at her place of work later that
day with the tragic news.

Recording a verdict that he killed himself the coroner added:
‘Nobody could have known that Mr Cairns would take his life and
nobody should have a conscience about it.

‘It is clear that he had financial problems,’ added the
coroner.

Cause of death was hanging.
