A knifeman who stabbed a popular Scots doorman to death ‘simply enjoyed violence’, an Old Bailey jury was told today.

In his closing speech to the court QC John Bevan told the court ‘there was absolutely no reason’ for the murder of ‘gentle giant’ George Napier.

‘Whoever did kill Mr Napier is a man whom using a knife has no consequence,’ Mr Bevan said.

Father-of-three Mr Napier, 36, was attacked by a gang of four thugs summoned by Spencer Sheppard, 29, after the doorman turned him away from a south London club for not paying pnds stlg five admission.

One of the three, Duane Daniels, 27, alone stands trial at the Old Bailey for repeatedly plunging a knife into the 6ft 6ins bouncer’s heart.

Jurors heard also heard that Sheppard set his his American Pitbull dog ‘Colonel’ onto Mr Napier and embarked on a ‘frenzied revenge attack.

‘George Napier was a family man who did absolutely nothing wrong that night,’ said Mr Bevan.

‘He simply pushed out the aggressive Spencer Sheppard who seemed to claim a right to free entry into any club he wanted to.

‘Spencer told his brother he had been pushed out – no one does that, it seems, to the Sheppards.

‘What a pathetic non-existent reason for doing what he later did.

‘

Spencer used his mobile phone and called his brother Louis, 31, Daniel Clark, 24, and knifeman Daniels to the Paradise Bar, in New Cross.

‘The killer takes a knife in a wholly unprovoked and ferocious nature and stabbed George Napier in the heart, head and legs,’ Mr Bevan continued.

‘Whoever did this, forget about Daniels, had a complete lack of feelings.

He must have enjoyed violence for its own sake.

‘There was no reason for it.

It wasn’t even his fight.

There was no reason to stab him, but that person, whoever it was, chose to.

The prosecutor warned the jury they will never know the full story because the defendant made no comment when quizzed by the police and did not give evidence in his trial.

He said if Daniels were innocent he would have wanted ‘to shout it from the rooftops.

‘There is a host of questions to which you do not get an answer because the defendant is content that all sorts of allegations are made.

‘They are accusations of perjury – people telling lies to you in order to get a innocent man convicted of murder.

‘What do you get from him on that topic? Silence.

‘

‘He he has an answer to put about the murder then you may have thought he would have wished to shout his innocence from the rooftops.

‘Is the truth he he has no answer that would bear close scrutiny.

‘

Mr Bevan added Daniels had been ‘untroubled’ by inflicting extreme violence against a key witness – his ex girlfriend Rose Ansellem, 25.

‘He cut her so severely she had to spend a week in hospital.

Afterwards he laughed about it and told her: ”Do you wanted me to give you something to really cry about?’

Mr Bevan said eye witnesses said the knifeman was black – Daniels was the only black man of the four attackers, the court has heard.

He reminded the jury of the defendant’s two confessions to the killing – once to his girlfriend and then to his cousin.

And more compelling, said the prosecutor, was the forensic evidence left by Daniels in a dustbin close to the murder scene.

A woolly hat was discovered with the defendant’s and Mr Napier’s blood on it, said the prosecutor.

Miss Ansellem has told the court Daniels wore a similar Nike hat but Daniels’ only comment to the police was to claim the headgear was not his.

The incident happened outside the Paradise Bar, in New Cross on November 10 last year.

Mr Napier, who has relatives in Scotland, has worked as a doorman in Dingwall, Wester Ross.

Daniels, of no fixed address, denies murder and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm on November 10 last year.

Clark, [40] Rosenthal House, Rushey Green, Catford; and the Sheppard brothers of [147] Albyn Road, Deptford, have admitted conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm on November 10 last year.

They will be sentenced on November 30 at the end of the trial.

All were remanded in custody.
