A nurse who clamped an elderly man down in his bed with a mobile food-tray to stop him wandering about during her night shift escaped with a caution today.

Diane Ellis trapped the frail 75-year-old by using the table to hold him down and then piled furniture next to it to stop him escaping.
The chairman of the UKCC Professor Martin Bradley told her: ‘Although your actions are regarded as
professional misconduct your name should not be removed from the register.
‘The committee has decided to give you a caution.
‘You should realise this is a very serious matter to found guilty of misconduct.
You must understand the committee does not condone or excuse your actions in any way.
‘
The professional conduct committee of the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting had found the nurse guilty of misconduct on three counts.
The charges were restraining the elderly man in his bed, shouting at patients, and giving unprescribed enemas.
A fourth count, ordering patients to remain in bed before 7.
30am was not considered misconduct, although the facts were proved.
Her counsel, Lee Gledhill, said that Mrs Ellis ‘had learnt many valuable lessons’ from the issues raised at the misconduct hearing.
