A nurse who delivered a baby without training as a midwife today (mon) claimed she was above the law of the land.
Dorothy Stewart said that she was a member of the Church of God, and was not governed by the nurses’ codes of conduct.
In a bizarre rant she branded members of the UKCC ‘murderers and liars’ and said she did not care if her name was removed from the register.
Stewart, flanked by two women pals during the hearing, had denied delivering a 17-year-old woman’s baby in April last year.
The committee had heard how the teenage girl, referred to as Patient A, had gone to the Homerton Hospital in east London after falling pregnant but failed to turn up for subsequent appointments following her initial scan.
In April 1999 she was visited by a midwife and two social workers who discovered she had recently given birth to a healthy baby.
As a result of information given by Patient A, a supervising midwife and colleague visited Stewart at her home in Amersham Avenue, Edmonton, north London where she confirmed delivering the baby.
But one of the women, Patricia Ryan, said that when pressed Stewart became agitated and slammed the door in her face.
Miss Ryan told the hearing: ‘She said she had been a nurse for 20 years and the baby was fit and healthy.
‘She could not see what all the fuss was about.
She actually considered herself to be better qualified than a midwife.
‘She became very very agitated.
It was not possible to engage in conversation and she slammed the door in my face.
‘
Stewart, who has another address which is a church in Hackney, denied misconduct and refused to recognise the committee’s jurisdiction over her.
She told them: ‘I am not guilty of this allegation.
I have done nothing wrong.
‘I am not under the same body as you.
I am from the church of God – you have your regulations and we have ours.
‘
The committee took less than half an hour to find Stewart guilty of misconduct and erase her name from the register.
Chairwoman Alison Norman said: ‘No person on our register or indeed any citizen of this country is above the law of the land.
