A television engineer ran for help with a knife embedded
in his back after he was stabbed by his deranged wife, the Old
Bailey heard on Monday.
Victim Alan Davies, 30, asked a neighbour to call
the police but the horrified neighbour did not mention to Mr.
Davies that a knife was sticking in his back up to the hilt,
fearing he would go into shock.
And police who rushed to the scene also kept silent until
Mr Davies was safely in hospital.
The court heard Julie Davies, 27, had been acting
strangely to her husband and five-year-old daughter for almost two
years.
‘It was clear to her husband that Mrs Davies was unwell
and was acting rather strangely and to some extent violently,’ said
prosecutor Mr Colin Pitt.
Davies was prescribed tablets and her behaviour seemed to
improve.
On the evening of February 20 this year the couple had
several minor arguments at their home in Revesby Road, St
Hellier Estate, Carshalton.
But Mr Davies thought nothing more of it and soon became
engrossed in his paperwork.
And while he was standing at a set of shelves he did not
notice his wife behind him.
‘The first he knew of her being there was when he felt
a very heavy punch-like blow in the back,’ said counsel.
He heard his wife say: ‘Now you’re getting the
punishment.
‘
‘He felt that the blow obviously delivered by his wife had
broken his back, so intense was the pain.
It was agonising.
‘
Mr Davies managed to struggle into his garden and shout
out to his neighbour, asking him to call the
emergency services.
‘He said that his wife had broken his back and he
believed that his wife was ill,’ said Mr Pitt.
‘It was then the neighbour saw the knife sticking between
his eighth and ninth ribs but he would not tell him the full extent
of the injury in case in went into shock and collapsed.
‘When the police arrived they too would not tell Mr Davies
for the same reason.
‘
The knife penetrated to a depth of five inches and had to
be removed in the operating theatre.
But it missed all the vital organs and miraculously Mr Davies
has made a full recovery.
Police broke into the home, fearing for the little girl
when Julie Davies would not open the door, but the daughter was
unharmed.
Davies admitted wounding with intent and was remamded for
psychiatric reports.
