BLM coin chucker sobs as he walks free

A protester who hurled objects at a police line during a Black Lives Matter march wept as he was let off with a conditional discharge.

Luca Trani, 20, lobbed a series of items, thought to be coins at officers in Whitehall, central London, on 6 June 2020.

Judge Gregory Perrins said Trani’s actions were ‘Incredibly unnecessary and unjustified.

‘You got caught up in events and acted without thinking.

‘I know you say you regret what you did, I suspect that is probably correct.’

John Lucas, defending, said Trani had a very traumatic childhood in which his father beat him regularly.

‘The effects on a young person can be traumatic and long lasting.’

Mr Lucas said Trani is now in steady work and ‘calm and positive about his future.’

Judge Perrins added: ‘You realise it was a mistake, you realise that it was a significant error in judgment.

‘I am going to impose a lesser sentence in the hope that it will enable you to put this matter behind you as quickly as possible.’

Trani of Ealing, , pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour and was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

Wearing a blue suit, Trani broke down in tears sitting in the dock.

‘Provided you do not commit further offences, that will be the end of it.’
