Warped child killer Brian Field showed no emotion as
he was jailed for life for the murder of 14-year-old schoolboy Roy Tutill in 1968.

Judge Jeremy Gordon told Field, who has child sex convictions dating back to the year after the killing: ‘This was the killing of a normal happy healthy boy.

An act particularly obnoxiouz for all right minded people.

‘But your crime goes much futher than that.

Having taken a just 14 year-old boy away in your car to satisfy your sexual desires you then commited forceful dreadful sexual acts.

‘And shortly thereafter you strangled him, almost cretainly with a rope.

‘You dumped him in the boot of your car and returned home to your wife and young son.

Two days later you discarded his body.

‘These acts and the consequences must have haunted his parents for the rest of their lives.

‘The rest of his family and friends must still suffer for what you did.

‘You intended to destroy what you belived to be the sole source of evidence against you.

’32 years later you have been proved wrong and advances in modern science techniques have led to your conviction, and stand as a warning there are few if any hiding places for sexual and violent criminals from modern techniques.

‘

Judge Gordon commented on mitigation put forward that Field had remorse since the murder.

‘I am bound to observe your criminal behaviour since tends to indicate remorse has been a long time coming,’ the judge added.

Field has a string of child sex convictions including one in Wrexham in 1969 and another in Aberdeen three years later.

Speaking outside court former Superintendant Philip Doyle said: ‘Obviously I am very pleased that he has he has been convicted today.

‘The one regret is we did not catch him then to prevent him abusing all these other boys.

‘

The white haired detective said the case had remained with him during every day day of his retirement.

‘You never forget,’ he said.

Roy Tutill’s aunt Monique Guerin said it was justice at last for the boy’s family.

‘His parents had to go to their graves without knowing that justice has been done.

‘Justice has at last been done.

It was not too soon.

‘

Surrey Police will investigate Field’s activities since the murder of Roy Tutill and are appealing for information from the public.

Det Chief Supt David Cook said outside court: ‘His activities over the years will become subject to investigation in due course.

‘Should any person, in the light of his admission of guilt in this matter, have any information concerning the police to contact Surrey Police who will take with interest anything they have to say about his activities over the years.

‘Brian Lunn Field is, and will remain, an extremely dangerous man.

‘

Earlier the court heard how on 12 November 1969 at Wrexham Magistrates, Field was convicted and fined for gross indecency, after he passed obscene notes to undercover police in a public lavatory.

But in November 1972 he was jailed for two years at Aberdeen Sheriff’s Court for indecently assaulting a 14-year-old boy.

On that occasion Field pounced on a young lad who was walking along a quiet country lane.

His victim was forced to strip from the waist down before Field molested him and then drove off.

In April 1982 he was fined for gross indecency at Oswestry Magistrates Court after fondling a 17-year-old boy.

In September 1983 at Shrewsbury Crown Court Field was jailed for four years after being convicted for two counts of buggery.

Field invited a 16-year-old boy into his own home before mounting a sex attack.

That sentence was later reduced to two years.

At Stafford Crown Court in June 1986 Field was jailed for four years for falsely imprisoning two boys.

The lads aged 13 and 16, were given a lift by the pervert, who threatened them with a wheelbrace and then forced them to remove their clothing.

‘Both boys secured their release by jumping from the moving car,’ said Miss Joseph.

Defence barrister Adrian Fulford, QC, told the court
father of three Field had been left with the ‘terrible, corrosive and all-consuming secret’ of killing the teenager.

‘Clearly when he was a young man there were strong impulses which acted in him, which made him carry out this terrible act and also made him commit other offences.

‘He has never been able to forget escape or avoid the terrible events at the end of the 1960’s.

‘He has found no peace in the intervening years since the death of Roy Tutill.

‘He told the officers when he initially confessed that he did so out of panic.

‘He most certainly did not go out that day intending to kill.

‘Something happened during the course of the unlawful sexual activity that was taking place.

‘Something happened that caused Field to panic and resulted in this happening.

‘He wishes through me to express in the clearest terms his sorrow for what he did and to make it clear, without wishing for any sympathy, he gained absolutely no benefit for the terrible thing he did.

‘As he told the police he expected at some stage he would be arrested for this and evidence would be produced.

He has lived with that for some 30 years.

‘

At the time of the murder Roy was known as ‘the boy who never came home.
