Former football star John Radford today (THURS) toasted victory in his pnds stlg 3,900 redundancy battle with a non-league club.
Goal hero Radford, 52, who helped Arsenal to their historic double win in 1971, was laid off as manager of Bishop’s Stortford FC at the end of last season.
He was due a golden handshake from the Herts club, but was forced to take the case to an industrial tribunal when bosses failed to pay up.
And ex-striker Radford was celebrating today after the panel ordered the ICIS Premier side to give him the money.
He beamed: ‘I’m delighted it’s over.
It’s not about money, it’s the principle.
‘
Radford joined Bishop’s Stortford as a general manager from Queens Park Rangers in 1987, looking after team coaching and admin.
Despite taking the team to the third round of the FA Cup in the late-90s, he was made redundant in May last year after a ground change led to the club appointing a full-time chairman.
Radford, who retired as a pro in 1981, was promised pnds stlg 3,850 redundancy money, but has not received it.
In a brief hearing at Stratford, east London, today, the club – which was not represented – was ordered to pay the cash.
Afterwards Radford, who now works as a driver for a friend, said: ‘I don’t mind if they have got someone someone full-time who is going to do the job.
‘I got a letter saying I was redundant, which was fine.
But why say they are going to give me some money and then not do it? It’s the principle of it.
‘
John Goodwin, current chairman of Bishops Stortford FC, refused to comment.
Radford was a Highbury favourite in the 1970s after scoring in the club’s 1970 Fairs Cup Final win over Dutch side Anderlecht.
He also knocked in a famous hat-trick against Man Utd during Arsenal’s double season.
