One of two brothers accused of murdering a man in a vengeance stabbing told a jury he lashed out at the victim fearing he was about to be attacked.
Moshin Khan, 19, and Imran Khan, 21, gassed Muhzham Shahzad and stabbed him with a screwdriver after Moshin was beaten up, the Old Bailey has heard.
Imran told the court he was in the Stratford area on his way to buy cannabis with a friend on January 10 when his brother telephoned him.
‘Moshin said to me that Hamza’s lot are behind him and they are looking to jook him up – that means to stab him.
‘
A week before the attack on Mr Shahzad, Moshin had a fight with a man called Hamza Ejaz leaving him with a broken nose.
Imran said he and a friend drove to Farnan Avenue, Walthamstow, as his brother begged them to hurry up over the mobile.
‘I searched quickly through my seat of the car and in the glove compartment there was some sort of shelf,’ Imran said.
‘I just grabbed the nearest thing to me and it was a screwdriver.
‘I was starting to walk towards the pavement.
‘I saw my brother, he was standing with his back to the railings, and some bloke in a hood.
‘His hands were in his pockets and he was bowling towards Moshin and I thought that he was going to stab Moshin.
‘
Imran said the man suddenly turned towards him and said: ‘What? What?’ in an aggressive manner.
He continued: ‘He was moving his hands around in his pockets and I moved back because I thought he was going to pull out something.
‘I just swung with my right hand.
I just wanted to get him away from me.
‘
Imran and Moshin then got into their friend’s car and drove off.
It was in the car that Imran realised the blade was missing from the screwdriver.
He told the jury that he thought the blade had fallen out.
It had broken through temporal bone and was embedded seven centimetres into Mr Shahzad’s brain, the jury heard.
Mr Shahzad, 21, died in hospital five days later.
Moshin Khan, of Forest Road, Walthamstow, and Imran Khan, of Windsor Road, Walthamstow, both deny murder.
Moshin also denies administering a poisonous or noxious substance with intent.
The trial continues.
