Richard Fisher, defending Mushtaq Ahmed, said: ‘We would submit there are matters to be considered in this case.
‘The defendant is 40 years of age and was 39 at the time of the offence
‘He is still a relatively young man and a man of good character.
‘He also partially accepted his responsibility for the death.
‘
Ahmed had pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
‘He knows he has caused pain and severe distress to his daughter.
‘They are reconciled to the extent that is available to them.
‘
Det Insp John Macdonald, attached to the Specialist Crime Directorate East, which investigated the murder said: ‘Rexhep was clearly murdered because his girlfriend’s father disproved of their relationship.
‘They wanted to marry and Ahmed could not face the thought of his daughter being with an Albanian asylum seeker who is his eyes was not a suitable partner.
‘Ahmed lulled Rexhep into a false sense of security by promising him employment and the chance of proving himself to be worthy of his daughter.
‘In fact all he was doing was keeping control over Rexhep’s movements so he could kill him.
‘I was fortunate enough to meet Rexhep’s family who were grieving over the loss of the death of their eldest son.
‘I hope two things come out of this trial.
‘One is that the victim’s family can start to come to terms with his death now that court proceedings are at an end.
‘The other is that this result will again show we are determined that ‘honour’ type killings will not be tolerated and will be investigated as thoroughly as any other murder.
