A ‘dangerous’ giant with a history of violent attacks on women
who spurn his affections is now facing a jail term for torching
the flat of his former girlfriend.

Severen Williams, 36, launched his fire raid on the empty flat
just days after being given a suspended sentence for beating up
Angela Birningham.

Late on March 29 this year, he poured petrol through the
letterbox of her flat in Pepys Road, Brockley, then returned an
hour later and pushed lighted scraps of newspaper inside.

The resulting blaze badly damaged the flat, causing pnds stlng
2,500 damage.

Williams, who stands well over six foot tall, was immediately
suspected and arrested.

He denied recklessly endangering life and property by arson,
claiming that he knew Miss Birningham, 24, had moved out of the
flat a few days before.

Instead he admitted simple arson and being in breach of the
three months suspended jail term for the earlier clash with his
victim.

Williams had previous convictions for violence relating to
other girlfriends and one malicious wounding conviction after he
attacked a love rival with a lavatory seat.

Mr John Ryder, defending, called for a full psychiatric probe
into Williams’ mental state in the hope of preventing further
offending against the women in his life.

‘In the doctor’s opinion he remains a dangerous man and is
likely to re-offend without treatment.

‘The psychiatrist says it is only through psychotherapy that
some prospect of preventing further occurrances can be achieved.

‘
Judge Brian Smedley QC adjourned sentence on Williams, of
Rochdale Way, Deptford, until July 24, but warned that despite an
obvious need for psychiatric help, all sentencing options re
mained open.
