A carwash owner accused of acting as the middle-man between a bitter wife and the hitman who murdered her husband has refused to give evidence at the Old Bailey.

Paul Hayter, 35, remained silent following the testimony of wealthy businesswoman Angela Bristow and car dealer Raymond Ryan.

The jury heard instead a statement from a rival sandwich shop owner who supplied his ‘Squeaky Clean’ business with rolls and salads.

Bristow, 50, allegedly paid ‘fixer’ Paul Hayter, 34, to contract out ruthless killer Raymond Ryan because she feared she would lose her comfortable lifestyle and pnds stlg 200,000 house if she left her partner.

She also stood to gain life insurance payments of more than pnds stlg 150,000.

It is claimed Ryan was paid pnds stlg 10,000 to gun down 48-year-old baker Mario Commatteo as he left his home in Whyteleafe, Surrey.

Janet Marshall, manager of ‘Crumbs’ at (373) Croydon Road, said Hayter was always generous about paying for his staff’s lunch.

She first met him when she was making a delivery to the industrial estate behind the Rose and Crown Pub on Godstone Road in April last year.

‘A man approached me and asked me if I could call on him.

The following day I went to the rear and found he had a business.

‘I began delivering to Paul’s on a regular basis.

He would often buy a chicken and pasta salad.

‘He was always generous to the people working for him and would always buy his staff sandwiches.

‘I remember Paul telling me a couple of other women in rival businesses had approached him but he was buying from me now.

‘Paul always paid up for what he bought.

‘

Ryan, of Whitebeam Court, Warren Road, Purley, Bristow, of Whyteleafe Hill, Whyteleafe, and Hayter, of Valley Road, Kenley all deny murdering Mr Commatteo on March 30 last year.

Mr Commatteo is originally from Cardiff.

The trial continues.
