A violent dad who used a machete to saw into his stepson’s neck was jailed for seven years today (TUES).
Peter Williams, 38, used the lethal two-foot weapon on Thomas Noakes as a family row degenerated into a sickening attack.
His 20-year-old victim had told an Old Bailey jury how he felt his head ‘going loose’ as his vicious stepdad attacked him outside their home in North Cheam, Surrey.
Williams denied deliberately wounding the youngster, claiming he was injured during a struggle after he lunged for the weapon.
But the jury took just an hour and a half to find him guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Sentencing Williams, Judge Simon Smith told him:
‘Nothing in the history of relations with your stepson, or whatever his behaviour might have been, justifies or excuses this serious crime.
‘It was a terrible thing to do.
You were digging that knife into his neck as hard as you could.
‘
Giving evidence, Mr Noakes had told the court: ‘I just felt like my head was going loose.
I felt like I could not hold my head up properly.
‘
Luckily, a trained paramedic living next door rushed out and was able to give the victim vital first aid before he was taken to hospital.
He spent four days in Hillingdon Hospital receiving treatment but will be permanently scarred as a result of the incident on July 28 last year.
During the five-day trial the jury heard there was a ‘history of dislike’ between Williams and the victim.
Several hours before the attack Mr Noakes was left nursing a chipped tooth and black eyes after being attacked by eight men as he left a pub in Burnham, near Slough.
Mr Noakes suspected his step-father might be behind the attack but he could not be ‘100 per cent sure.
‘
Later that evening Mr Noakes went round to his mother’s home in Blackrod Close, Hayes, to pick up his wages that were left for him there by his boss.
But machete-wielding Williams opened the door, grabbed the lad and shoved him face first against a wall.
Mr Noakes said: ‘He told me he was going to kill me.
He got behind me.
He had both hands on the machete and was pushing it into my neck.
‘
The victim said he managed to break free from his attacker but realised he was bleeding heavily.
Prosecutor David Stanton told the court: ‘The main injury was caused as a result of pushing the blade against the flesh of Mr Noakes neck and started to break the skin.
‘The defendant was using it almost like a saw.
‘
The court heard Williams, formerly of Blackrod Close, Hayes, Middlesex, had previously received a 12 month jail term in February 1988 for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
