Former partner recalls time with former Spandau Ballet star

A former partner of Spandau Ballet star Ross Davidson told a court how they had ‘mutual’ sex at a house party.

Ross Davidson, 36, wanted sex up to six times a night and would force himself on women who refused him, it is claimed.

Jurors heard the Scotsman was ‘a bit of a sex symbol’ after starring in the West End musical We Will Rock You about a decade ago.

Aberdeen-born Davidson became lead singer in Spandau Ballet in 2018 and was best known to fans as Ross Wild, jurors heard.

He filmed himself groping women while they slept and enjoyed role-playing rape scenarios, Wood Green crown court has heard.

He is accused of a series of sex offences against five women and raped three of them, it is claimed.

The offences are said to have taken place over a ten year period between 2013 and 2023.

Jurors have heard that when he was interviewed by police Davidson maintained ‘everything was consensual between him and the women concerned’.

Davidson called a film-maker as a defence witness today (tues) and she confirmed she had known him since late 2018 or early 2019.

The woman, who cannot be named, said they worked together on creative projects after he was charged with sexual offences.

‘He wasn’t able to work as a performer. It was very tough for him emotionally.

‘I really enjoyed working with him. He was entertaining. There was never a dull moment. He would pick up a guitar and start playing. The time passes by, it’s never boring.’

She said they would attend events together and Davidson ‘attracts female attention’ but he wasn’t always comfortable with that.

She told the court Davidson always kept a ‘nice, pleasant demeanour’.

Asked if he had any bad qualities the defence witness told the court: ‘He was always late, particularly because of his ADHD and partly because he has bouts of anxiety.’

She confirmed she had sex with Davidson once in a guest bedroom at a house party in the autumn of 2019.

Charlotte Newell, KC, defending, asked the witness about the encounter and she told jurors: ‘He went to the roof and to have a smoke…he came back to the room and we were intimate.’

She said there was no filming or ‘role play’ adding: ‘It was mutual. It was very awkward. It was a house party and people were walking about so it fell apart.’

Asked about the allegations made by five women against the musician the woman said: ‘It beggars belief. I only saw him being surrounded by women. He would always shy away from it.

‘From my own personal experience it doesn’t fit. It’s out of character.’

The witness told the court she was present at Davidson’s home in Finchley on 19 October 2022 when police officers came to charge him.

She claimed a female officer ‘mocked’ Davidson by producing a silk t-shirt from his chest of draws and saying he didn’t want to take it to the cells as it was expensive.

‘The whole experience was quite dehumanising towards Ross.’

Davidson, of Finchley, north London, denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, one count of voyeurism, and one of controlling behaviour.

The jury was directed to clear Davidson of one charge of intimidation relating to one of the complainants at the close of the prosecution case.

Davidson replaced Tony Hadley as Spandau Ballet’s lead singer in 2018 after playing Elvis Presley in the hit West End musical Million Dollar Quartet, alongside the band’s bassist Martin Kemp.

The trial continues.
