A mum has been cleared by a jury of hurling her tiny baby son
across a room.
Cops had told Snaresbrook Crown Court how they saw Jeanette
Craig, 28, throw five-month-old Joe some six feet through the air
before he was caught by a PC.
But Miss Craig maintained that as she turned, clutching the
youngster, he was grabbed from her hands by a police officer.
The jury acquitted her of child cruelty after hearing of an
incident on January 6 this year.
Miss Craig, of Longhayes Avenue, Chadwell Heath, Romford, had
denied the charge.
The court had heard how after a row with her boyfriend Joseph
Cox, officers from Barkingside Police Station were called to Miss
Craig’s home.
PC Clarkson had told the jury that they first spoke to Mr Cox who
was looking after his son – baby Joe.
The officer said that when Miss Craig arrived she was abusive and
told them to get out before running upstairs.
And in Miss Craig’s bedroom the PC had alleged how the mum picked
up Joe by his clothes, turned and threw him ‘six feet through the air
before I caught him.
‘
PC Clarkson added that if he had not caught him ‘the baby would
have hit the wall.
‘
He had described the mother as ‘drunk and hysterical.
‘
PC Clarkson said that she had to be handcuffed and taken to the
police station.
Giving evidence Miss Craig, who has another four-year-old son,
recalled that on the day of the incident Mr Cox had walked out after a
row but during the afternoon she dropped Joe off with him at another
house.
She said that she returned to her home later on to find PC
Clarkson going through drawers in her kitchen without a search warrant
and Mr Cox upstairs with the baby.
Miss Craig denied swearing at the officers or referring to her
tiny son abusively and shouting: ‘You can have him’ – before the alleged
hurling incident took place.
She agreed that in the bedroom she picked up Joe by his clothes.
‘As I grabbed the baby, I turned.
As I turned someone else had
the baby in their hands.
‘No way did I throw him.
I didn’t let go of him until he was in
someone else’s hands.
‘
Brunette Miss Craig had sobbed as she recalled how she was pushed
face down onto her bed, handcuffed, carried head first downstairs and
thrown into a police van.
Miss Craig told the court that both her sons are back living with
her now and described them as ‘very well and very healthy.
