A young woman told a jury today (WED) how her former boss offered pnds stlg 50,000 if she could find a hitman to kill her common-law husband.

Baker’s assistant Jacqueline Gaywood, 22, said businesswoman Angela Bristow constantly asked her to help ‘get rid’ of Mario Commatteo.

She told the Old Bailey: ‘She was quite happy to pay someone to do it, to shoot him.

It was something like 15 to 25 thousand for getting a gun and upwards of pnds stlg 50,000 to do it.

‘I told her I cannot believe you said that because my dad’s an ex-policeman.

‘

Bristow, 50, allegedly paid ‘fixer’ Paul Hayter, 34, to contract out ruthless killer Raymond Ryan, 35, for a payment of pnds stlg 10,000.

She feared she would lose her comfortable lifestyle and pnds stlg 200,000 house if she left Mr Commatteo.

Bristow also stood to gain life insurance payments of more than pnds stlg 150,000.

It is claimed Ryan blasted the 48-year-old baker with a sawn-off pump-action shotgun as he left for work from his home in Whyteleafe, Surrey.

Miss Gaywood worked with Bristow’s common-law husband at Village Bakers in Merstham High Street from Autumn 1998 to spring 1999.

Mr Commatteo was hardly in his shop because he was running a mobile hamburger van in Croydon.

Asked about Bristow’s relationship with Mr Commatteo, she said: ‘It wasn’t a very good one.

She wasn’t very happy at home.

She was always complaining about him.

‘She said she wasn’t allowed to have friends or anything or get out of the house.

‘

Miss Gaywood said Bristow did not want her partner’s business to succeed and was unhappy at using the profits of her shop in Whyteleafe to prop his bakery up.

‘I said to her, Why don’t you leave him but she wasn’t going to lose everything because of him, her house, her sons and her business.

‘She said he would take her to the cleaners financially because he was entitled to half of what was hers.

‘It came into the conversation that she wanted to get rid of Mario or sort him out.

‘There was once when she had a really bad night.

She told us she had put sleeping tablets in his dinner and he had fallen asleep with his face in his dinner.

She thought it was funny.

‘I was going out with my ex-boyfriend and he is not from a very nice background.

Angela found out and approached me and said do you know anybody I could get a gun from or drugs.

‘She said if my ex-boyfriend got a gun she was quite happy to give us money or if we know anybody she would pay us.

‘She told me that was hiding money inside the lining of her handbags in keeping it in the wardrobe and hidden more under the floorboards.

Miss Gaywood’s mother, who worked at both shops from 1997 to 1998, said Bristow constantly asked her customers to kill Mr Commatteo.

Elaine Snook told the jury: ‘She once said she had hired someone to kill him.

She was saying about the cost, a huge amount of money.

I can remember thinking that was a mortgage.

‘I was forever saying leave him.

She said she wouldn’t let him have everything she had worked so hard for.

‘She said she couldn’t do it herself with a knife but with a gun she could.

‘She used to ask customers if they knew anyone who could get a gun.

She said she would do it early morning and hide the gun at the Merstham shop.

And then she would walk back to the Whyteleafe shop.

Ryan, of Whitebeam Court, Warren Road, Purley, Bristow, of Whyteleafe Hill, Whyteleafe, and Hayter, of Valley Road, Kenley all deny murdering Mr Commatteo on March 30 last year.
