The court heard the knifeman’s father was a barrister and had been called to the Gray’s Inn chambers in 1971.

Passing sentence on Durrani, Judge Goddard said his loss of self-control had been ‘occasioned by his jealousy.

‘I accept the unspeakable horror to which you and your family were subjected, particularly the murder of your father,’ the judge told Durrani.

‘But the fact remains that on this occasion you lost all your self-control and you brutally attacked Mr Paul, stabbing him five times, kicking his head and stamping on his head.

‘

Mr Paul, who had sat in court throughout the hearing, declined to comment as he left court.
