Tank chasing lawyer Phillip Shiner faces trial for making false claims about British soldiers
A human rights lawyer accused of making false claims against Iraq war veterans will face trial in 2024.
Phillip Shiner, 65, is charged with four allegations of fraud dating back to 2007 after the National Crime Agency launched a five-year investigation.
Shiner, of St John’s Road, Birmingham, appeared at Southwark Crown Court via a video-link this morning (Fri) wearing a black suit, white shirt, and a red tie.
He plead not guilty to the four charges against him.
It is alleged Shiner brought thousands of criminal complaints to the Iraq Historic Investigations Team (Hat), a body set up by the Ministry of Defence to investigate soldiers.
Not a single serviceman or woman was charged and Ihat was shut down in 2017.
A trial date was set for 2 September 2024, with a case management hearing on 19 May 2023
Addressing Shiner today, Judge Gregory Perrins said ‘Your trial I’m afraid is going to be quite a while away.
‘There will be further hearing on 19 May next year just to check everything is proceeding.
‘It will be a council only hearing and I’m sure you will hear the outcome of it.’
Shiner was released on conditional bail and will reappear at Southwark Crown Court in September 2024.
