Top boxing promoter Frank Warren was today (Monday) cleared of a pnds stlng 1.
2 million VAT fraud after slugging it out with Customs and Excise for six weeks.
A jury of three women and eight men took under four hours to find him not
guilty of evading the tax between February 1996 and June 1997.
After tasting victory, the 48-year-old, of Church Lane, Watton at Stone, Herts, hugged and kissed wife Susan and father Frank snr.
But former partner Christopher Roberts, 50, of Erskine Road, Mistley, Essex,
was found guilty of the same charge, relating to the Hertford based company
Sports Network (Europe).
In addition, Roberts was found guilty of a pnds stlng 750,000 VAT scam relating to Sports Network Ltd, which employed Warren as a salaried consultant on a profit share.
The court heard both concerns had handled the showman’s promotions of the
fights of his stable of top boxers, including Prince Naseem Hamed, Frank
Bruno, Nigel Benn, and Steve Collins.
Roberts, who was remanded in custody, will be sentenced on June 1.
