A crooked solicitor who plundered more than pnds stlg 70,000 of his client’s cash was today (Tuesday) kicked out of the profession.
Shamed Mohammad (corr) Afsar, 35, won substantial damages for an accident victim and advised him to put the cash in a trust fund.
But he was plotting from the outset to steal the cash – and even accompanied his victim to the bank to pay in his compensation cheque, the Solicitor’s Disciplinary Tribunal heard.
Afsar was a partner in Sheffield firm Mughals when the offences occurred, said Mr Gerald Lynch, prosecuting for the Law Society.
‘These were matters of the upmost seriousness.
They involved dishonesty of the worst kind,’ Mr Lynch added.
Afsar was convicted of ten charges of theft at Doncaster Crown Court on November 29 last year and was later sentenced to three years in jail.
He was told by the trial judge he ‘systematically
milked these funds for your own purposes.
‘
The judge added: ‘You are in my judgement wholly unfit to be a solicitor and I expect that the Law Society will strike you off in due course.
‘
Afsar did not appear at the tribunal and was not represented.
He is now attempting to launch an appeal against his criminal conviction.
