A police officer who offered to stop a friend gett

A police officer who offered to stop a friend getting a parking fine was jailed today (THURS) for three months.

PC Khalid Nazir, 32, tracked down the issuing officer and suggested tossing a coin to decide the fine’s future – heads the ticket would be ripped up, tails it would be paid.

But the lottery never went ahead and the colleague reported Nazir to his seniors at Wandsworth Police Station in south west London.

Southwark Crown Court heard Nazir was suffering marital problems and thought he owed the woman driver a favour after she acted as a go-between for him and his wife.

When questioned Nazir immediately admitted what he had done but insisted he had no intention of interfering with the ticket.

He said he regretted the suggestion which was ‘a spur of the moment piece of madness.

‘

The pnds stlg 30 fine has been paid but Nazir will now be dismissed from the force in shame and a promising career lies in ruins.

Jailing him, Judge Peter Fingret said: ‘You approached a probationary police officer, a colleague, who had issued what happened to be his first fixed penalty notice to a woman known to you.

‘As a police officer you abused your position of trust, albeit not for profit, and as a result you will be dismissed from the force.

‘The public should have absolute faith in a police officer, who has powers and responsibility.

‘Fortunately there are not many such officers who exploit that trust.

‘It is particularly sad to have to give you a prison sentence because of your marital and personal problems.

‘You had a successful career and your future was a bright one.

‘I am also aware of the devastating effect that a prison sentence will have upon you.

‘

Testimonials from former colleagues described Nazir as ‘exceptional’ ‘valuable’ and ‘extremely capable’.

Nazir, of (124) Grove Road, Mitcham, Surrey, admitted misconduct in a public office on November 8 2001.
