A drug addict got trapped in a rubbish chute and perished trying to find his secret stash of heroin, an inquest heard today (TUES).

Claudion Anunciacao, 32, suffocated after getting stuck between the shaft and a roll of carpet.

Neighbours at the run-down tower bock in south London heard his desperate cries for help but were too scared leave their homes.

Mr Anunciacao’s body was found two days later after the chute became blocked.

Police at first thought he may have died elsewhere and the body had been dumped in the shaft.

But tests later showed that the injuries Mr Anunciacao had were caused after his death.

And police discovered the junkie often stashed an emergency supply of heroin on a ledge inside the rubbish chute.

Detective Chief Inspector Norman McKinley, of the serious crime group, told Southwark Coroner’s Court: ‘It is possible he went in and attempted to extract some drugs from the ledge.

‘A number of residents heard cries for help but were too scared to go out onto the landing to find out what was going on.

‘

The tragedy happened in the early hours of October 10, 1999, at Weyland House in Robsart Street, Stockwell.

A post mortem showed Portuguese Mr Anunciacao died from asphyxiation and heroin poisoning.

Coroner Selena Lynch recorded an open verdict.
