KENNY: WINDOW CLEANER SCALDED SON’S GENITALS
A drunken window cleaner who maimed his son by pouring a kettle of boiling water over his genitals has been jailed for 15 months.
Dennis Kenny left his son, Matthew, 20, with permanent scarring and up to 15 per cent burns after attacking him at their home.
The row began when Matthew returned from a night out on December 2 last year and his father began yelling at him, calling him ‘a poof’ for working as a hairdresser.
Kenny, 52, also hurled abuse at his wife, Jackie, calling her ‘a slut’ for going out to a party that night, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.
Mr Babatunde Alabi, prosecuting, said that Kenny had admitted ‘he might have had’ 12 or more cans of Fosters that evening.
‘Matthew Kenny defended his mother by telling the defendant he shouldn’t be rude to her,’ said Mr Alabi.
‘The argument continued and the defendant went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee.
‘Matthew Kenny could hear the click of the kettle as if the defendant was reboiling it and made a comment such as ‘I suppose you’re going to pour that over me.’
‘He saw the defendant pick up the kettle and walk towards him where he was sitting in the armchair.
‘The defendant walked up to his right side and poured the contents of the kettle over Matthew.
‘Matthew reacted immediately by taking off his clothes, running upstairs and getting in a cold shower.
‘The defendant went upstairs to the bathroom door and said: ‘That will teach you to call me a c**t.’
Mrs Kenny called the police and ambulance service to the family home at (27) Westfield Road, Dagenham, and Matthew Kenny was taken to hospital for treatment.
Mr Martin Hooper, defending, said that the defendant was now living with his mother and had been served with an injunction this morning preventing him from going within 200 metres of the family home.
‘He has lost his relationship with his son for the forseeable future, and probably that of his wife,’ he said.
‘Through solicitors he understands that divorce proceedings are now in place.
‘Since the day it happened, he has not touched a drop of alcohol.’
Kenny works as a contract window cleaner for a company that services airports and other industrial sites, and Mr Hooper said this offence would probably mean he lost his job.
The judge Mr Recorder Brian Lees, sentencing Kenny, said: ‘I very much hope there will be a reconciliation in your family, at least between you and your children.’
Kenny, of (38A), Halbutt Street, Dagenham, admitted causing grievous bodily harm.
