The steak knife waver

A 62-year-old man who brandished a steak knife in the street in a row over a woman has been given a 30-day community order.

Brian Biggs armed himself with the silver-handled blade after he was confronted outside the home of his female friend Rebecca Brooks.

When they asked whether he was waiting for anyone on 25 May 2018, he became aggressive, threatening to stab them both.

Biggs went back inside his friend’s flat in the hostel on Camberwell New Road, south London and grabbed ‘the first utensil he could find’, and waved it at the man.

The two then grappled on the floor after he put the blade down.

Judge Freya Newbery said: ‘You’d gone to see your friend, Ms Brooks, and during the course of the evening events came to pass where she was involved in an act of aggression by another man who was very aggressive to her, pushing and shoving, and also made a threat to you.

‘You retreated into the premises, having tried to be the peacemaker, but what you did in a foolish moment was to grab an implement, it happened to be a knife, and for a very short space of time waved it at a man.

‘There may have been a bit of wrestling. The real seriousness was over in a moment, really.

‘The police were called you were immediately accepting of what happened.

‘You have always accepted what happened here and have been extremely apologetic about it from the earliest time.’

Kane Sharp, defending, said: ‘He wanted to defend Ms Brook and simply grabbed the first utensil he found, waving it around hoping to scare off his person.

‘He told me if there was a whisk to hand, he would have grabbed that.’

Biggs, of Olympia Way, Whitstable, Kent, admitted affray, and was given a 30-day community order.
