Anunuso, 48, was later found guilty of four charge

Anunuso, 48, was later found guilty of four charges of misconduct after it emerged she was jailed for drug smuggling in the 1980s.

The hearing was told in November 1989 she was convicted at a court in Maryland of one charge of conspiracy to import heroin.

It is believed she accepted an eight year jail term in a ‘plea bargain’ when five similar charges were dropped.

Anunuso appealed against the length of the sentence in 1993 but her application was rejected.

The tribunal ruled she was guilty of four allegations of misconduct, but a fifth charge that she lied about the jail term on a job application to Moores Nursing Bureau was dropped.

Announcing Anunuso would be removed from the nurse’s register, committee chairman Jackie Mahoney said: ‘She did not act to safeguard the interests of the patient and she did not serve the interests of society when she betrayed the public trust and confidence by her illegal misuse of drugs.

‘We also believe there is a risk to other patients of similar incidents in the future.
