A doctor in full combat gear went on a ‘Rambo’ sty
A doctor in full combat gear went on a ‘Rambo’ style rampage through a hospital ward threatening to shoot people with a fake machine gun, the GMC heard today.
(Thurs)
Yat Chan pulled up in a jeep and marched into the causality department of the hospital where he worked warning shocked staff: ‘I’ve got a new gun.
‘
He then invited a female nurse outside to the carpark where he pulled out the terrifying M16 rifle carried by Sly Stallone in the Rambo movies.
The bizarre incident happened after Chan turned up at the Nevill (corr) Hall hospital in Abergavenny dressed in full military uniform including camouflage trousers boots and a flak jacket with his name embroidered on it.
He struck up a conversation with staff and then turned to sister Rennie Smith and said: ‘I have bought a new gun but I can’t show it to you and it is illegal.
‘
She replied that she did not believe him and Chan then told her he bought it on the internet for pnds stlg 400.
He then allegedly led her to his jeep in a darkened corner of the car park and pulled out the weapon.
Lynn Griffin, for the GMC said: ‘It was a replica M16 machine gun.
She told him to put it back, but he didn’t and repeatedly asked her to hold it.
‘
There was a young girl nearby on her mobile telephone and he indicated towards her and said to sister Smith, waving the gun around: ”Shall I shoot her.
‘
‘Despite this sister Smith still was not worried and thought perhaps it was all in jest.
‘At that stage Dr Chan took from the weapon a magazine that he place in the vehicle.
‘He then cocked the weapon and pointed it at sister Smiths’s abdomen.
‘She felt a vibration as if he had pulled the trigger.
‘It clearly made her feel he was behaving like a child, showing off and trying to impress her.
‘She also felt violated by his behaviour and told him not to be stupid.
‘
Sister Smith walked back into casualty but he followed her and asked: ‘Are you frightened?’
Miss Griffin added: ‘It was felt his behaviour was intimidating.
‘
The police were called and they
discovered the weapon was a replica capable of firing plastic pellets.
They seized the gun, but at 4am the following day Chan rang sister Smith and told her: ‘They have disarmed me.
‘
The hospital launched an inquiry and Chan, whose registered address in in Hong Kong, later left his post.
Sister Smith later told the hearing how she feared she would be baldly hurt in the incident.
She said: ‘I was quite upset.
I was in a state and believed I could have been quite seriously injured.
‘
He denies serious professional misconduct on 16 October last year.
The hearing continues.
