A pervert who fathered his step daughter’s son when she
was just 14 has been jailed for seven years by an Old Bailey
judge.

The 46-year-old father, who repeatedly had sex with the
girl after his mother took a string of lovers, tried to blame
a local teenager for getting his daughter pregnant.

He then bought the victim’s silence for years with threats
that the family would be thrown out on to the streets if she told
anyone who the real father was.

And it was two years before the girl summoned up the courage
to tell the police.

The truth was then confirmed by a ‘DNA fingerprint’ test.

The court heard that the father began having sex with the girl
in the family’s Horley home whilst his wife, the girl’s mother, was
working nightshifts at Gatwick Airport.

The girl only complied with his demands because she felt for
him sorry for him over the way her mother had treated him, said
Mr Brian Stork defending.

But just two months after she had given birth the stepfather
raped her.

‘It was a lomg time before she told anyone what had happened
said Miss Mary Jane Mowat, prosecuting.

‘She had been warned that she would get into trouble,
he would go to prison and the family would probably go on the
streets.

‘As she got older her resolve strengthened and she made a
complaint in the summer of last year.

‘
The father, an office manager who also worked as a van driver,
admitted a specimen charge of indecent assault between April and
August 1989.

He could not be charged with unlawful sexual intercourse
because a year passed between the date of the offence and the
date it was reported.

The former soldier also confessed to a charge of rape in June
1990.

Mr Stork told the court he worked almost seven days a week
to try and provide for his family.

But his wife came to resent his almost constant absence
from the family home.

‘In about 1980 she began the first of several affairs.

There were nine in all,’ said counsel.

‘On one occasion the daughter walked in on her mother
when she was engaged in an act of sexual intercourse with a
boyfriend.

‘
The victim told her father and she began to feel greater
affection towards him than her mother, claimed Mr Stork.

The man tried to keep the family together but his
wife ‘choose to taunt him about his ability as a husband, as
a father and as a sexual partner.

Then one night he went into the girl’s bedroom and
found her trying to hide a vibrator under her pillow, said
counsel.

‘He realised she was more sexually aware than he had
envisaged.

‘He was torn between his feelings for her as a father
and her feelings for him as a young woman.

He found himself
incapable of saying no.

‘
Counsel added that it was only when the girl refused
and he raped her that the father realised the enormity of
what he was doing and he never touched her again.

His wife has since divorced him and a girlfriend has
ended their affair.

The stepfather wept as Judge Geoffrey Grigson told
him: ‘I think you understand that rape is almost the most
serious offence.

‘You were to all intents and purposes that girl’s
father.

It was your duty to protect her but you abused her
and you abused the trust placed in you.

‘The fact that she became pregnant simply illustrates
how grossly irresponsible you were and following the birth
of the child you forced yourself upon her.

‘
The court heard that the victim is now bringing up her
son.
