Dr Brennan missed a cancer because he examined the x-ray film with his naked eye by holding it up to a light, the GMC heard.

He allegedly failed to use either a view-finder screen or a magnifying glass to check the mammogram.

The woman patient, known as A33, was later diagnosed with a carcinoma.

And Dr Kelsey told the committee how she went behind her boss’s back when he failed to recommend urgent assessment.

She said: ‘I found she had been returned to the routine recall system.

‘It wasn’t good enough.

I took the notes into Dr Brennan and said I was unhappy about the situation and in my opinion it was obviously a carcinoma.

‘I got the films out to show him and he just held them up to the light.

‘I could see he wasn’t really looking at them in a proper fashion.

‘You need a magnifying glass.

He obviously prepared to review it with me so I just walked out.

‘I wanted this lady to have a biopsy and he could see that this time I was upset.

‘

Dr Brennan attempted to bargain with her and offered to see the patient again in a year instead of the usual three, Dr Kelsey claimed.

But Dr Kelsey decided to hand the case over to surgeon Martin Cooper.

Brennan reacted angrily to the move.

She added: ‘He said: ‘What the hell are you doing?’

‘I just said: ‘It’s done.

”

She later told the committee she did not discuss cases with radiologist Dr Graham Urquhart because she did not respect his opinion.

‘I noticed that he wasn’t picking up on some things that I was picking up on,’ added Dr Kelsey.
