An expert later revealed that the anti-sickness drug Dr Montague-Brown gave to Mr Joiner may have made his condition even worse.

Dr Stephen Wright said that Stemetil can lower blood pressure, a symptom Mrs Joiner had already allegedly reported her husband had.

And he also claimed that Dr Montague-Brown would have immediately identified that the patient had a heart problem if he had examined the sticky goo he was bringing up.

Asked about the effects of Stemetil, Dr Wright told the committee: ‘It can lower the blood pressure of a patient.

‘If you have a patient with blood pressure it lowers it even further and would exacerbate an already difficult situation.

‘

Dr Wright added that stomach examinations should be carried out when the patient is lying down, not sitting up as Mrs Joiner claims her husband was.

And he said that at a more thorough check-up of the patient would have alerted the doctor to heart problems.

Dr Wright, who produced a report into the case, told the committee: ‘I still wonder why the doctor was sure the patient was vomiting from his stomach.

‘The description that Mrs Joiner repeated time and time and time again did not sound like vomit to me, and neither did the way he was bringing it up.

‘She described, it seemed, that he was trying to clear the back of his throat of this sticky, frothy stuff – that does not come from the stomach.

‘I think if the doctor had studied the stuff he should have considered that it might have been cardiac.

‘Nothing in medicine is certain, but I have never seen sticky, frothy stuff come from anywhere else other than lungs in a heart condition.

‘

Dr Wright added that Mrs Joiner claimed the fluid was pink and odourless which again indicated it was not vomit.

The hearing continues.
