BOYD-CHAMBERS: ALLEGED LOOTER WAS CAUGHT WITH CAR FULL OF BOOTY
A Tesco worker caught at the wheel of a car full of goods allegedly stolen during the London riots was granted bail this morning (Mon).
Nathaniel Boyd-Chambers, 20, was arrested after a member of the public noted down the number plate of a vehicle said to have been used to loot shops in Catford, South London, on the night of August 8.
When police flagged down the same car on the afternoon of August 12, they found a flat screen TV, Nintendo games consoles and brand new trainers in the boot, it is said.
Boyd-Chambers, who was driving the car at the time, was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods.
He was initially remanded in custody at a special sitting of Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on August 14.
But following a hearing at Inner London Crown Court today, which he did not attend, he was granted bail on condition that he lives at his home in Lewisham.
Judge Roger Chapple also imposed a curfew keeping him at home between 7pm and 7am, with the start time varied to 11pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays so he can go to work at Tesco in Orpington.
Boyd-Chambers is due to appear again at Camberwell Green on 23 September alongside the passengers in the car so that the matter can be committed to the Crown Court.
His barrister Madeleine Wolfe told the court that in addition to his part-time work at Tesco, her client is a trainee electrician who has almost completed his final qualifications.
Gregor McKinley, prosecuting, said that during the riots in Catford on the night of August 8, the car in which Boyd-Chambers was eventually arrested was twice seen to draw up outside JD Sports, where looters filled it with goods taken from that and other local stores.
At around 4pm on four days later, the same vehicle was stopped in Bromley, on which date Boyd-Chambers was at the wheel.
From the boot police recovered a collection of computer games, two Nintendo consoles, a Samsung flat screen TV, a number of items of sports clothing with a JD Sports bag and some trainers.
Boyd-Chambers, of (41) Kemsley, Lewisham Park, South East London, is accused of theft and handling stolen goods.
